How to set healthy workplace boundaries (without offending anyone)

Here’s the thing – we know you’re capable of doing absolutely anything you put your mind to. When it comes down to it, you’ll grab a double shot espresso, put your hair in a messy bun, put on some gangster rap and downright smash anything on your to-do list. But that’s not the point.

What if you didn’t have to push through, grind your teeth and get through it? What if you didn’t let certain things steal your time, energy and peace? What if you established early on in the game that YES, YOU CAN – but actually, it’s a no for now?

Find Your Balance

Balance is not something you find, it’s something you create. In a world where it’s becoming increasingly difficult to switch off and disconnect, we dare you to do just that. Plot twist: It will actually increase your productivity in the long run. Researcher Mark Rosekind of Alertness Solutions found that the respite effect of a vacation can increase performance by 80%. Set some time off to stop, re-group and go offline. This will help you stay focused, kick anxieties to the curb and work sustainably. 

Think About It

Girl, we’ve all been there. We overcommit, overwork and overdo it until all that’s left is that overwhelming weight on your shoulders. Frankly, we’re over it – and you should be too. Next time you’re faced with a task or request that you simply don’t have time for or that isn’t sustainable – take a deep breath, pause and take your time to respond. This is called ‘The art of pausing’. This technique will give you a chance to check in with yourself to determine whether you have a conflict or not.

Communicate

Communicating your workflow process, schedule, goals and boundaries is a surefire way to ensure that everyone is on the same page from the get-go. However, this can easily feel easier said than done. Our go-to strategy when it comes to communicating with upper management and employees is to embrace transparency and ‘straight talk’.

While it can feel tempting to tip-toe around difficult news, it’s important to be transparent about the latest happenings, your expectations and the state of your business. This doesn’t mean you need to keep it cold and matter of fact, but should rather encourage you to stay authentic, honest and real about what you do and don’t know.
